Soon, artists like Madonna, Rickey Martin and Jennifer Lopez were singing over tracks you could dance to at a club. By the early 2010s the electronic dance music genre had grown from its roots in these tight-knit, marginalized communities in Chicago to become a massive industry, generating billions of dollars. On the previous day, Friday June 23 from 5-9pm the Chicago Cultural Center will host the conference portion of the festival, featuring Robert Owens as Keynote Speaker. Panel discussions include one hour talks on the queer roots and safe spaces in Chicago’s house music scene, promotional strategies, activism and more.
